an incredible relic from the victoria era, a silver plated belt buckle motif cuff bracelet, that fastens on a hinge. it's got a wonderful patina that seems to pick out the details of the design, along the edges, and tracing parts of the belt buckle.
Victorian jewellery is steeped in symbolism, the belt buckle representing the binding of two people together, whether in love or friendship. Not only for romantic love, buckle jewellery was often exchanged between siblings or best friends. In some cases, these pieces were made to honour the enduring memory of a lost loved one.
They were often worn stacked in pairs or one adorned on each wrist. They were not only fashionable but carried deep sentimental value.
